Why dect 6.0 is banned in Pakistan

A few days ago, many of you may have received a text message from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) itself, warning you that usage and buying of DECT 6.0 cordless phones is illegal and anyone found using them would be reprimanded. Do not take that warning lightly, for strict action will be taken against the rule-breakers.

Now a lot of you may be wondering why PTA has illegalized the use of DECT 6.0 in the first place. According to PTA officials, their technical team found that the strong signals of DECT 6.0, interfere with the signals of Cellular Mobile Operators (CMO’s). That is the very reason why they have banned the particular cordless in the country and are seeking law enforcing agency’s help in eliminating its use.

DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) is a digital wireless telephone technology, which has contributed to making cordless phones common in both businesses and homes. A large number of consumers have adopted this technology due to its ease, voice quality and wide coverage area and lesser cost. Consumers only pay the cheap cost of fixed line calls, while enjoying mobility and portability of an expensive mobile gadget. However, not all cordless phones are being banned – only DECT 6.0 in order to ensure the smooth functioning of our CMO’s.

This news came after PTA’s awareness campaign to educate the public regarding illegal sale and use of DECT 6.0 Cordless Phones. In this regard, PTA has held meetings with concerned authorities in Karachi, Lahore, Muzaffarabad, Peshawar, Quetta and Rawalpindi with the officials of FIA, Police, Chambers of Commerce, importers, vendors and sellers of telecom equipment.

After several illegalizing DECT 6.0 and several warnings about its usage, the PTA has conducted 8 successful raids in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. During the raids, huge stocks of illegal DECT 6.0 phones were confiscated. The raids will continue until PTA is successful.

PTA has also warned all the illegal importers, distributors, sellers and users of DECT 6.0 cordless phones, to refrain from such illegal activity otherwise legal action shall be taken against them through Law Enforcement Agencies including FIA.
